A state name appears, you click it on the map, 50 times. The US states map quiz is the most direct way to find out whether your mental America matches the real one, and for most players the two maps diverge somewhere just west of the Mississippi.

A country with two difficulty settings

The American map splits into an easy half and a hard half, and the border between them is historical. East of the Mississippi, states formed early and small, with borders following rivers and ridgelines; the result is a crowded puzzle of distinctive shapes. West of it, states were drawn late and large with a ruler, producing that famous grid of near-rectangles. Distinctive shapes are easy to recognize and hard to fit in tight quarters; rectangles are easy to fit and hard to tell apart. Pick your poison, the quiz serves both.

The specific trouble spots, from a thousand quiz runs’ worth of pattern: the Colorado-Wyoming rectangle coin flip (Wyoming is on top). The Kansas-Nebraska stack (Nebraska on top, it’s alphabetical top-down, which for once helps). New Hampshire and Vermont, two slivers leaning against each other, with Vermont on the left; the V’s of “Vermont” pointing away from the sea is one goofy mnemonic that works. And the Four Corners, the only spot where four states meet, which conveniently pins Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico in one image.
