World Capitals Quiz: Every Capital City on Earth

Pick the right answer from four options.

The world capitals quiz covers the capital of every one of the 193 UN member states, in both directions: name the capital from the country, or the country from the capital. It sounds like a memorization test. It plays more like a minefield, because the world’s capitals were chosen by politics, not by fame.

The four trick categories

Every wrong answer in this quiz falls into one of four traps, and naming them defuses most of the danger.

The not-the-big-city trap. Governments love neutral or purpose-built capitals. Australia picked Canberra because Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t both win. Canada runs from Ottawa, not Toronto. Turkey chose Ankara over Istanbul, and Brazil built Brasília from empty ground and inaugurated it in 1960. The famous city is the wrong answer surprisingly often.

The multi-capital trap. South Africa splits government across Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Cape Town. Bolivia claims both Sucre and La Paz with different official roles. The Netherlands crowns Amsterdam while governing from The Hague. This quiz accepts every officially correct answer, because we’d rather test your knowledge than your ability to guess our preferences.

The renamed trap. Capitals change names, and quiz players lag behind. Kazakhstan’s capital became Nur-Sultan in 2019 and reverted to Astana in 2022. Blink and you missed a whole era.

The never-heard-of-it trap. No trick, just exposure. Myanmar governs from Naypyidaw, a purpose-built capital unveiled in 2005. Half of Africa’s and Central Asia’s capitals live here for most players, and they’re where the real score gains hide.

Both directions, or it doesn’t count

Country-to-capital is recognition; capital-to-country is recall, and it’s reliably 20 points harder. “Kuala Lumpur?” answers itself. “Which country’s capital is Vientiane?” does not. Run the quiz both ways before calling yourself done, and use the continent versions to patch specific regions: Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. The world capitals list is the full answer sheet for study between rounds.

Frequently asked questions

How many capitals does the quiz cover?

Capitals for all 193 UN members, plus the extra ones for multi-capital states, so the true answer pool is slightly larger than 193. Any officially recognized capital counts as correct for its country, in both quiz directions.

What’s the most missed capital in the world set?

By volume, the quiet ones: Naypyidaw, Ashgabat, Ouagadougou, and their kin, missed through pure unfamiliarity. By heartbreak, Canberra, because players who know better still autopilot to Sydney. That single question has flattened more high-scoring runs than any other.

Does spelling count in type-in mode?

Reasonably. Minor typos and standard alternative romanizations are forgiven, so “Kiev” lands for Kyiv and a missing accent won’t sink you. The check is generous exactly up to the point where generosity would mean accepting a different city.

What order should I learn the world’s capitals in?

Continent by continent, weakest region first, always anchored to a map. Most players’ gap ranking runs Africa, then Asia, then Oceania. Pair each continent’s capitals quiz with its map quiz so every city attaches to a located country instead of floating in a list.
