Oceania’s map quiz has the strangest difficulty curve on the site. Two clicks in, you’ve placed Australia and New Zealand and you’re feeling unstoppable. Then the map pans across the open Pacific and asks for the other 14 minus two, and the ocean suddenly looks very large and very empty.
The continent that’s mostly water
Oceania is the only quiz region where the countries are outnumbered by the space between them. Beyond the two anchors, its 14 nations are almost all island states, and several are genuine microstates. Nauru covers about 21 square kilometers, making it the world’s smallest island country and its smallest republic; you could drive its ring road in under an hour. Tuvalu’s nine atolls total around 26 square kilometers, and it trades places with Nauru near the bottom of every population table on Earth. Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Micronesia scatter thousands of islands across areas of ocean bigger than Western Europe, with land areas smaller than a mid-sized city.
The learnable structure is the classic three-way split. Melanesia hugs Australia’s north and east: Papua New Guinea (the half-island giant, and famously home to about 840 living languages, more than any country on Earth), then Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji trailing southeast. Micronesia is the sprinkle of small states north of Melanesia: Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati. Polynesia stretches east: Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu. Three sweeps, 14 countries, done.
Kiribati deserves special respect: it straddles the equator and reaches across the International Date Line, spreading one small nation across an absurd stretch of planet. Clicking it correctly feels like landing a dart on a moving train.
Why this quiz punches above its weight
Oceania is the region most world quizzes let you skip, which makes it the cheapest edge available. Its microstates star constantly in the smallest countries list and in geography trivia, and the daily challenge will eventually serve you a Pacific atoll silhouette. Players who’ve done this quiz solve that day; everyone else posts sad emoji grids. Finish the set, then confirm your dominance on the world map quiz.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the Oceania map quiz?
14 UN member states, from Australia down to Nauru. Dependent territories scattered through the Pacific, like New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and Guam, appear on the map but aren’t answers, since they belong to France, the US, and other states.
What’s the trick to finding the small island nations?
Learn the three cultural regions as search zones: Melanesia near Australia, Micronesia to the north, Polynesia to the east. Knowing which zone a country belongs to shrinks the ocean before you start hunting, and zoom does the rest. Random scanning of the Pacific is how runs die.
Which Oceania country do players miss most?
Kiribati and Tuvalu are the classic final bosses: tiny land, enormous spread, minimal news coverage. Nauru at least has the “world’s smallest island country” fame going for it. All three fall to deliberate reps, and they’re the exact countries that make this quiz worth finishing.
Is Oceania a real continent?
It’s the standard regional grouping for the Pacific, used by the UN and by this site, and broader than “Australia” the continent. The how many countries in Oceania page covers what’s in, what’s out, and why the answer confuses people.
